Wine in a box is bad, right?
Greetings Friend!
Don't scoff. Seriously.
Boxed wine or "Bag in a Box (BIB)" wine can be better than you think and has benefits the traditional bottle can't provide. Wine producers have embraced BIB for decades, you just didn't know it.
The first box wine, believe it or not, was patented in 1964 in Australia. Larger wine producers found this to be a cheaper alternative to bottling their inexpensive bulk wines. Hence, the bad rap.
In 2003 Black Box Wines out of California introduced premium wines in a box and many smaller, more boutique wineries followed suit.
On the wine drinker's front, not only is better wine available in a box but it is:
- Easy to open, no corkscrew needed
- less expensive by volume
- easier to transport
- stays drinkable longer than a bottle. As in 4-6 weeks vs. 3-4 days in a bottle.
- SIGNIFICANTLY less environmental impact. As in 12-29% of the carbon footprint of bottles.
